Zidansek hopes to overcome 2022 struggles

Tamara Zidansek has yet to win a main draw in 2023.

The 25-year-old lost her opening match in Auckland against Lauren Davis. She then made it to the main draw in Hobart with back-to-back qualifying-round wins over Zara Larke and Diane Parry, but lost a close three-set bout to Ysaline Bonaventure.

She also lost a tough three-set match in the opening round of the Australian Open, falling to world No. 1. 2 Ons Jabeur.

The world No. 98 is now looking to claim their first peloton win of the season in Hua Hin on Monday. She participated in the tournament in 2019 and reached the semifinals.

After highlights of 2021 when she reached the semifinals of the French Open, Zidansek had a decent run in 2022. She finished with a 21-24 record at all levels. She was a semi-finalist in Adelaide-2 and reached the third round of the first two Majors but made many early exits throughout the season.

At the end of the season, she reached her first final of the year, finishing second at an ITF event in Monastir.

Sharma qualifies for the peloton

World No. 224 Astra Sharma made it into the main draw in Hua Hin over the weekend with back-to-back set wins in the qualifying rounds.

The Australian, who defeated Thailand’s Chompoothip Jundacate 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday, edged out compatriot Ellen Perez 6-2, 7-5 on Sunday.

Against Perez, the 27-year-old converted 6 breaks from 9 and saved 3 from 8 to win the contest in an hour and 14 minutes.

Sharma is 5-2 in 2023. She was a quarter-finalist at the Canberra ITF but was only able to win one qualifying round at the Australian Open, falling in the second qualifying round.

She will play her first main draw match of the tour on Monday.

Sharma had a successful campaign in 2021, winning her first WTA title in Charleston. However, she struggled throughout 2022, causing her to drop out of the top 200 by the end of the year.

She got a no. 84 in February last year and will be looking to make the top 100 again this year. Can she put on a good show in Hua Hin?

Zidansek v Sharma prediction and tip

Zidansek is a slight favorite in this competition. The Slovenian may not have won a main draw match this year, but her previous two losses came in close three-set clashes, and one of them was against world No. 1. 2, so she will definitely support herself in this fight against Sharma.
