Donna Vekic didn’t have the easiest start at the Australian Open 2023. The former world No. 19 played against No. 179 Oksana Selekhmeteva and found herself in a three-hour slogfest that ended in a wild 6-2 2-6 7-6 (10) win for her.
The Croatian was out of her element after committing 40 unforced errors and winning 71% of the points after the first serve.
Despite this, the fact remains that Vekic is 4-0 so far in 2023. Her last tournament was the United Cup, where she went unbeaten – without losing a set – against Alize Cornet, Maria Carle and Despina Papamichail.
The 26-year-old, who is now ranked No. 64 in the world, is looking to get her career back on track after a rendezvous struggling with injuries and surgery. She finished last season 28-20, with her runner-up at WTA San Diego proving to be her redeeming grace. As a qualifier, Donna sent some big names like Maria Sakkari, Karolina Pliskova, Aryna Sabalenka and Danielle Collins.

Samsonova passes Paolini
World No. 20 Liudmila Samsonova enjoyed an enjoyable game on Tuesday as she defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-4 in just 71 minutes. While she committed 24 unforced errors, she hit 23 winners – compared to Paolini’s 5.
The 24-year-old Russian arrived at the Slam after a slow start to the year. She competed in Adelaide 1 and Adelaide 2 and walked away with a record of 1-2. The only win came against Shuai Zhang in straight sets, while losses came from Aryna Sabalenka and Amanda Anisimova.
However, Samsonova had a breakthrough in 2022, finishing in the top 20. She won three singles titles – Washington Open, Cleveland Open and Pan Pacific Open – and reached the fourth round at the US Open. Her final record was 30-17, which was her second straight season in which she won at least 30 games.
Samsonova v Vekic prediction and tip
This is likely to be a close match that can go either way. Vekic is more than comfortable against the top 10 players and it shouldn’t be too difficult to beat Samsonova. It all depends on their health and fitness.
