World No. 6 Maria Sakkari survived a scare in the second round against the 18-year-old Russian Diana Schnaider On Wednesday. The Greek finally prevailed in a nerve-wracking competition that lasted two hours and 35 minutes.
Shnaider, who survived the qualifying rounds, had a break early in the opening set. She then saved three break points in the final game before converting a fifth set point to draw first blood.
In the second it was the Greek who took a 3-0 lead but was world No. 1. 106 refused to just go under. She broke Sakkari once, was broken again, but stayed in the set by breaking again. Sakkari had three set points on Shnaider’s serve in the 10th, but Shnaider saved them all to level the set 5-5, but two games later Sakkari broke for the third time in the set to force the decider.
In the final set, Sakkari was the first to break for a 3-1 lead, Shnaider immediately countered to make it 3-2 but the Greek restored the lead in the next game and then held the lead for a 3-6, 7-5 , 6-3 win.
Sakkari started the season with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Yue Yuan.
With the two wins, the sixth-seeded team improved their season record to 5:1. She was 3-1 in the United Cup.
Sakkari, a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, is playing at the Australian Open for the eighth time. Her best were two fourth-round finishes, one of them last year.

Zhu annoys Teichmann
China’s Zhu Lin passed a second opponent on Wednesday to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career.
The 28-year-old, who is playing in the main draw of the Australian Open for the sixth time, sped past 32-seeded Jil Teichmann in the second round on Wednesday.
Zhu dominated the match from the start and took a 4-0 lead in the first set before the Swiss finally came on the board. But Zhu wasn’t broken in the set as she took a 1-0 lead in the match.
Zhu maintained her superiority in the second set as well, breaking world No. 1. 33 twice more to complete a 6-2, 6-2 win. Zhu saved all four break points she faced, converting four out of seven to advance to the next round.
The win was followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win over Rebecca Marino in the first round. Zhu is now 4-2 in 2023. She was a quarterfinalist in Auckland but lost in the opening round in Hobart in the lead up to the first Major of the season.
Sakkari v Zhu prediction and tip
Sakkari is the superior player but she will be a bit nervous after the nervous second round clash. Zhu, on the other hand, will ooze confidence. The Greek is expected to regroup and come back stronger in the third round.
