Notre Dame defeated Navy on November 2, 1996 at Croke Park 54-27 and 50-10 at Aviva Stadium to start the 2012 season. After a 35-32 win over Navy in Baltimore last season, Notre Dame holds an 81-13-1 lead in the all-time series.
On September 2, the Irish meet a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) for the first time when the Tennessee State Tigers travel to Notre Dame Stadium. It will also be the first game Notre Dame will play against a Football Championship Subdivision team.
The first real road test of the 2023 season comes next week in Raleigh, North Carolina when the Irish meet NC State. The Wolf Pack led the all-time short streak 2-1, with Notre Dame claiming a 35-14 win in 2017.
Next week features a return to Notre Dame Stadium and a different schedule first. The Central Michigan Chippewas and the Irish meet for the first time on the gridiron on September 16.
A two-game homestand continues with one of the most anticipated games of the 2023 schedule when Ohio State visits Notre Dame on September 23. The Buckeyes are 5-2 against the Irish and will make their first appearance at Notre Dame Stadium since 1996.
Back-to-back road games follow the home stand as the Irish travel to Duke on September 30, followed by Louisville on October 7. Notre Dame has a 5-2 advantage over the Blue Devils in the series with two wins in recent sessions (2019, 2020). The Irish will travel to Louisville after a win for the second time in school history to open the 2019 campaign and maintain a 2-1 lead over the Cardinals.
Southern Cal visits Notre Dame Stadium on October 14th every other year in mid-October to renew college football’s greatest intersectional rivalry.
The matchup between the Irish and Trojans will be followed by the first bye week of the season before Notre Dame hosts Pittsburgh on October 28th. One of Notre Dame’s most-played opponents with 72 previous encounters (ND leads all-time streak 50-21-1). , the Panthers will visit Notre-Dame Stadium for the first time since 2018.
The challenges of the Atlantic Coast Conference don’t end with the Panthers as next week brings a trip to Clemson on Nov. 4. The Irish are hoping to level the series with the Tigers 4-4 and will make their third trip overall to Memorial Stadium and the first since a 24-22 setback in the rain in 2015 that ruled out until the final minute of the game.
The second bye week of the schedule follows the trip to Clemson and the 2023 home game schedule concludes with a visit to Wake Forest on November 18th. Notre Dame is 5-0 all-time against the Demon Deacons.
The traditional Thanksgiving weekend trip to California wraps up the 2023 regular season when the Irish take on Stanford on November 25 at Stanford Stadium. Notre Dame has a two-game winning streak at Stanford Stadium (2019, 2021) and holds a 22-14 all-time streak advantage against the Cardinal.
