Lajovic beats Cerundolo in the second round
Lajovic may have fallen outside the top 70 in the rankings, but he’s continued to thrive this season and scored some results.
His last win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round might have cost him two hours and 40 minutes but it meant Lajovic has reached the quarterfinals for the third straight season.
As a qualifier in Buenos Aires, he had passed Sebastian Baez to enter the round of eight. He defeated Diego Schwartzman and Laslo Djere in Rio to do the same. And here, after defeating Camilo Carabelli in the first round, Lajovic edged Cerundolo 6-2 2-6 7-6 (2) to make it to the round of eight.
It was also how Lajovic saved a match point from his own serve in the final set before pushing it to the tie-breaker and prevailing as the winner.
Can he take that further now than he’s done all season?

Etcheverry sends the other Cerundolo away
It’s been a bad day for the Cerundolo brothers as higher-ranked Francisco is also eliminated from the competition. It was Argentine Etcheverry who defeated Francisco Cerundolo in three sets and two hours and 29 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals.
Entering the tournament in second place, Cerundolo fell to Etcheverry’s solid defensive play, who saved seven of the nine break points he faced. And while he dropped a set and missed four match points in the second set, he got and converted the fifth chance he got and made the cut.
Etcheverry won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the last eight after his quarterfinal appearance at the Buenos Aires Open earlier this season.
Having previously defeated Fabio Fognini in the first, Etcheverry looks battle hardened enough to take on Lajovic and this could be a match that hits the spot.
Lajovic v Etcheverry prediction and tip
Lajovic will be a favorite here, but only just. We also reckon a three-pointer here could be par for the course.
