It wasn’t the best start for Kontaveit this season as she lost both her opening games in the first two tournaments she participated in this season.
At the Adelaide International 1, Kontaveit was down in three sets against Qinwen Zheng while Paula Badosa defeated her in the second Adelaide tournament. That’s why a win here in her first round match against Julia Grabher was crucial for her confidence.
And so, too, did the biscuit crumble as Kontaveit recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win over Grabher.
The world number 19 needed just 70 minutes. in her opening workout, in which she only lost serve once in the encounter – and that with a 0:4 lead in the second set.
Things will get tougher in the second round for Kontaveit, but for now she will bask in some relief at having overturned a losing streak that has seen her four games in a row, including two late last year.

Linette sends the sherif out
After starting the season solidly, Linette seemed to have hit a small hurdle when she lost to Madison Keys in the United Cup and then failed in the first round of the Hobart International.
That loss in Hobart to Alison van Uytvanck might have come from exhaustion after playing four games in a week earlier, but she’s rested now and coming back well. In her first game against Mayar Sherif, Linette delivered a 7-5, 6-1 win in an hour and 27 minutes to seal that spot with Kontaveit.
Linette lost her serve early in the game and got broken in game three, but managed to stay steadfast from there. She broke in game eight and then back again in the 12th to win the opener.
In the second, the Polish number two took a 5-0 lead before Sherif eventually clawed one back, but that would never be enough.
