1. Flemish island (3-0, Class 2A)

Notable victories: Tangerine, New Smyrna Beach, Ridgeview.

View: The Golden Eagles at the top are undeniable. They continued their run to the state semifinals this year on a vise lock defense. Three games, 79 points scored and zip allowed. Yes, nothing against the Flemish defense. Mykayla Maddox is the one to keep an eye on in Fleming. She has thrown seven touchdown passes and has nine tackles from her defensive position. Devyn Dudones has two picks to lead the defense. The balance of power has shifted in Clay County, and Fleming is the new leader in a traditionally deep county.

2. Bradford (5-0, Class 1A)

Notable Gain: Mittelburg.

View: The Tornados largely destroyed their opponents this year with a 188-8 aggregate score. The competition wasn’t unworldly, but the big win was a 13-8 slugfest against a very good Middleburg team. They have a trip to the 3-1 Suwannee next Thursday. Bradford takes second place in our debut rankings over Stanton.

3. Stanton (4-0, Class 1A)

Notable victories: Fletcher, Mandarin.

View: The Blue Devils were the Gateway’s best team last year, recording a 19-0 record in a playoff game against Choctaw before eventually losing. Stanton made another impressive start, crushing his first four opponents with a combined 122-0. Her first big challenge is only the visit to White on March 30th.

4. White (4-0, Class 1A)

Notable victories: Chiles, oak leaf.

View: Commanders are being talked about as one of the Gateway’s top programs. They hold an quality W against Chiles (19-7), which is the Timberwolves’ only loss this season. They also beat Baldwin, who got off to a rough start but remain a very good local team. Monster showdown against Fleming #1 on Thursday.

5. Paxon (4-0, Class 1A)

Notable victories: none.

View: The Golden Eagles have wiped out every opponent this season, surpassing them with a combined 183-6. It hasn’t been a gauntlet so far, with scuffles over Bishop Snyder, Yulee, Englewood and Riverside. The first major test will take place on March 28th at Fleming Island, followed by Middleburg on March 30th. Ansley Hicks threw 15 touchdown passes to seven different receivers.

6. Florida deaf (2-0, Class 1A)

Notable Gain: Mittelburg.

View: How about these dragons? They get last place in our Super 6 over Clay and Middleburg. The Dragons belted Palatka (26-0) and scraped out a 20-19 win over Middleburg. They have a challenging voyage to Ridgeview on deck on Thursday.
