Bencic storms past Tomova
Belinda Bencic is off to a good start in the Aus Open 2023. She played Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova and won 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour and eight minutes.
The Swiss was absolutely flawless in every respect, winning 86% of the points behind the first serve and committing just 12 unforced errors. She also hit five aces and 27 winners – all the while without giving Tomova a chance to break service.
Belinda has had a brilliant start to the season; She arrived in Melbourne with a 5-1 record and a singles title from Adelaide International 2. The current world No. 10 beat many big names such as Garbine Muguruza, Caroline Garcia and Daria Kasatkina to claim her seventh singles title.
She ended last season 42-18 with two trophies – a title from Charleston and a second cup win at the German Open. Bencic also reached the late rounds in a few other tournaments.

Liu beats Brengle
Claire Liu, 22, made personal history in Melbourne by reaching the second round for the first time here. In the first set, she beat Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 14 minutes.
The American wasn’t at her best, however, as she made 36 unforced errors and won 61% of the points from behind the first serve. If she wants to beat Bencic, she needs to step up her game significantly in the second round.
Liu had an eventful start to the year, reaching the second round in Adelaide as a qualifier and then losing to Yulia Putintseva in the Hobart International opener.
Claire’s record season was 29-22, consisting of a finalist performance in Rabat and the Clarins Challenger title. She also reached the semifinals in Monastir, sacking Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals.
Bencic v Liu prediction and tip
Bencic is the big favorite in this match. Given her form, overall pedigree and experience, she should have no trouble comfortably beating Liu and sailing through to the next round. Don’t expect any surprises here.
